It’s been nearly a year since I started Junk Miles, or Junk Miles Media as it’s officially known due to someone already having a legit business site called Junk Miles. It’s really hard for me to realize that it’s been a year already, but I guess time does indeed fly.
In the first blog entry to this site I contemplated what Junk Miles would and wouldn’t be. Overall I stayed pretty true to what I set out to maintain, but due to various issues (real life) I also failed at some of my goals for the site. I didn’t make it to more than a couple races to shoot photos, nor was I able to get away to explore some new routes, locations, and rides as I had hoped.
Not making it to the races to shoot was mostly due to time restraints, and family commitments, but I would be lying if I said that parts of it weren’t a combination of laziness and not really having a plan. Did I want travel several hours round trip to shoot photos just to give them away? Or did I want to attempt to sell them in some way, whether it be to racers, race directors, websites, or publications? Were they even good enough to entertain such thoughts?
The site mostly became a place to share photos from my various dirt road rides, hikes, and life. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I plan to keep doing just that. I am in NO way experiencing the personal mental anguish that I endured daily during my time publishing XXC Magazine. I’m happy to share my photos, define my personal style, and learn more about photography.
I’m happy that I continue to know what I like shoot (rural Michigan, wildlife, and soccer), and how I like to shoot it (while stacking up miles riding Michigan gravel roads, walking in the woods, or roving the sidelines at my son’s soccer matches).
My goals for the coming year are to keep doing what I’m doing, but also push myself out of my comfort zone to get shots; get up earlier, ride later, explore more, and become more confident shooting out in public or at events. Not sure if any of that will happen, but it’s a start.
If you’ve visited the site over the past year, I hope you enjoyed looking at the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them, and that you will continue to check back now and then.
