Beard of Zeus Faves

The act of actually racing my bike gets further and further away from my mind, as the act of photographing races gets further and further a part of reality. With that in mind I drove up to Traverse City this past Saturday to shoot some photos at the 2017 Beard of Zeus race. The race was the Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series finale, and the 90 minute cyclocross-like format really lends itself to moving around the course and catching the action in various locations.

I said at the very beginning of Junk Miles that I didn’t want to be a photographer that attempts to shoot every racer that rolls by. I dig that folks do that, and maybe it’s my magazine background, but my goal is to take more documentary approach. If you’ve ever seen the amazing images by Balint Hamvas of cyclephotos.co.uk, you know what I mean. I want to approach shooting in a way that documents the race more than just capturing a memory. I have a LOT of work to do to every even come close to a legend of the lens like Balint, but no harm in trying.

Having said that, I did take quite a few racer photos at the race and have posted them on SmugMug in the attempt to earn back some gas money.

The conditions Saturday were great for fat bike racing, but as someone who continues to learn as a photographer I found shooting in bright sun AND snow one a hell of a challenge. On top of that challenge I accidentally switched the white balance setting from Auto to Flourescent, and the first batch of photos were jacked up and needed a lot of Lightroom tinkering to bring them back. STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

Here are some of the photos that I dug, the rest are on SmugMug if you want to purchase a print or download.
